As Covid-19 halts protests in Hong Kong, judges fight Beijing on rule of law

Even as Covid-19 has brought the protests in Hong Kong to a near standstill, the struggle continues over the future of this city.

Hong Kong’s judicial system is particularly under threat from the Beijing Communist Party. Judges and lawyers say there are signs that Beijing will attempt to limit the authority of the courts in Hong Kong to regain control over important constitutional matters. Many lawyers speculate that China will interfere in the appointment of judges in Hong Kong as well. However, it is clear that if any such intervention does take place, resignations on the bench are likely to follow. Protests have been persistent in Hong Kong since late last year. Many protesters have since been arrested and their cases have been handled in court which has sparked further agitation from the public.
