What happened: On March 6, Aurat March Lahore filed a suit in the Lahore High Court, asking for the protection of women’s right to march on International Women’s Day (March 8) as the city administration, for its part, has not responded to the Aurat March organisers’ notification of the planned event.
Details: According to the organisers’ press statement, they informed the authorities about the march on Feb 26 but received no response. However, on March 4, the Lahore additional deputy commissioner directed Civil Lines SSP to meet with the organisers and dissuade them from going ahead with the march. It went on to say that if the organisers decide to go through with it,they will be responsible for their own safety. Press release: The organisers claim that it is their constitutional right to assemble and organise peaceful protests, “Women in Lahore have marched without promoting any type of violence or hate speech for the past five years. Instead, we have held peaceful processions demanding for the recognition of women’s and transgender people’s rights,” their press release stated. What’s next: Justice Shahid Waheed will hear the application on March 7 morning as the march is due on March 8 at 2 pm, beginning from the Lahore Press Club, according to the organisers’ plan.
