What happened: Sindh Police officers stated that children under the age of 12 are not allowed to work for small businesses like tyre shops, and hotels as they arrested two shopkeepers during a raid on Jan 5 and charged the violators under Section 337A of the Pakistan Penal Code. Child Labour Laws in Pakistan: Under the Mines Act of 1923, the minimum age for entry to work is 15 years, while the minimum age for employment is 14 years under the Employment of Children Act of 1991 , which is now efficient in Islamabad, Balochistan, and Sindh. According to Article 25(A) of the Constitution, the state is required to provide compulsory education to all children aged five to sixteen which means that children below this age are not permitted to work. Why it matters: Child labour threatens roughly 3.3 million Pakistani children, according to a UNICEF research , depriving them of school, health, and a normal upbringing. The majority of the underage labourers work in sectors like brick kilns and carpets.
