What happened: The National Polio Laboratory of Pakistan stated that the country had reported its second case of wild poliovirus in 2022 after new type-1 wild poliovirus was confirmed in a 2-year-old girl from North Waziristan. However, the current health minister has said, “I will be visiting the province myself to monitor the situation on the ground.” Details: It is to be noted that this is the fourth case of wild polio to be recorded globally in 2022 and the second in Pakistan, which was reported in April 2022 in the same district. Whereas, the country only reported one wild virus case in 2021 that was from Balochistan, but a statement by the NPLP read, “This indicates that a well-established wild poliovirus circulation within district North Waziristan.” More: On the other hand, it is pertinent to mention that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is known to be volatile and at risk for poliovirus awareness, as most backlash is received from the area.
