What happened: The leader of an Israeli far-right group called for the demolition of the Dome of the Rock Mosque or the Masjid Al Aqsa in the occupied East Jerusalem. The founder of Lehava, Benti Gopstein, posted the announcement that Yahoo News quotes as “Israeli settlers should unite on Jerusalem Day May 29 to break into Al-Aqsa and start dismantling the revered Muslim landmark and pave the way for building a Jewish temple at Al-Aqsa Mosque.” Details: The announcement has received backlash since it was posted on the online blog site. The Lehava group has also published a poster on social media showing an excavator next to the Mosque; as in another poster, the “excavator appears to be carrying debris from the Mosque.” It is pertinent to mention that Al-Aqsa Mosque is the third holiest site for Muslims, as it is believed that the Dome of The Rock is the place from which Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) ascended to heaven.
