Headscarves and religious clothes barred for students by the court in India

What happened: On February 10, a court in Karnataka stated that until a decision is made,  “But till the matter is resolved, no student should insist on wearing religious dress.”  It is pertinent to mention that the development came after numerous students in Karnataka filed a petition in the court challenging the decision of a ban on hijabs in a few schools in India’s Karnataka state. The Wire quotes lawyers for the petitioners as,  “The ban amounts to a suspension of our rights.”

Details: Whereas the schools in Karnataka were closed after Muskan Khan’s case, and the Karanataka administration banned the hijab region; however, the court has ordered to reopen the schools. Karnataka Udupi district banning the hijab instigated district-wide protests as DailyPakistan reported,  “Triggering protests outside the school gate. More schools in the state followed with similar bans, forcing the state’s top court to intervene..”

More: On February 10, the Karnataka court passed an interim order,  “Advising students against wearing religious garments until the final verdict is announced.”  Express Tribune quoted the Karnataka High Court judge as,  “These matters give rise to certain constitutional questions of seminal importance in view of certain aspects of personal law..”
