What happened: On March 28, Will Smith stormed the Oscars stage and slapped comedian, Chris Rock in the face for making a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Rock cracked a joke comparing Jada’s bald head to Demi Moore’s appearance in the film “G.I. Jane” and recommending she star in a sequel when he was presenting the best documentary prize with a short comedy performance. Smith walked up on stage to Rock and smacked him before returning to his seat and shouted profanities, eliciting awkward stillness and uncertainty in the Dolby Theatre. Details: Rock was able to go on and present the award, but the incident, a violent act by the night’s eventual best actor winner, threw a pall over the 94th Academy Awards. Academy’s statement: “The Academy does not condone violence in any form,” reads a statement released to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Twitter account approximately two hours after ‘the slap.’ The Academy tweet then attempted to redirect attention to the evening’s more solemn aspects, “Tonight we are delighted to celebrate our 94th Academy Awards winners, who deserve this moment of recognition from their peers and movie lovers around the world.” What’s next: Rock has decided not to file a police report, at least for the time being. That means Smith will not be prosecuted with assault, which could result in a sentence of up to six months in prison and a fine of up to $100,000. How the Internet reacted: People called Will Smith out on instigating violence during the awards ceremony as some pointed out how he was himself laughing at the joke until he saw Jada rolling her eyes at the joke in question. On the other hand, #ArrestWillSmith is also trending on Twitter as one of the users tweeted: “Assaulting a fellow artist on stage. It’s not like he is serious. It’s just jokes. You should be able to joke about anything in life. Arrest Will Smith and ban him from future award shows.” While Will Smith fans defended him for standing up for his wife, “You never make a joke about somebody’s wife even though it was meant to be funny it was overstepping and over the line,” one of the users wrote.
