What happened: On February 11, the Sindh Assembly the bill to restore student unions unanimously across the province’s educational institutions as the federal minister called it a “historic move.” Subsequently, the bill noted that the enrolled students would be able to vote for the student union as they can participate in it.
Details: At the same time, the bill mentioned that students are barred from using or keeping weapons inside an educational institution. It is pertinent to mention that it has been nearly 40 years since the former dictator General Zia-Ul-Haq discontinued student unions as a publication reported, “Barred students from assembling on university and college campuses to demand their rights.”
More: Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah was quoted by Dawn as, Unions would pave the way for a healthy and conducive environment and create a positive atmosphere in educational institutions.” The passed bill would work to maintain the students’ social and academic welfare and ensure their rights. Adding to his speech on the floor of the house, CM Sindh said, “We will not, in any way, allow the unions to affect or suspend educational activities on campus.”
