PM Imran Khan made the announcement on a telephone call with the National Disaster Management Authority chairman, Lt. Gen Mohammad Afzal, while on his trip to the US for the UNGA.
The NDMA chief informed the premier about the latest development in the situation at Mirpur after the September 24th earthquake and its aftershocks. The PM was also briefed with details of lost lives, injuries and damage done to properties in the impacted areas of Mirpur and Bhimber districts in AJK and Jhelum district in Punjab. Khan, after expressing his grievances over all the suffering, ordered the NDMA chairman to provide any necessities to the earthquake victims. “In pursuance of the directives of the prime minister, a financial assistance amounting to Rs500,000 has been decided to be disbursed among families of the deceased while financial assistance to the injured and loss of property would be announced in due course of time,” said an official press release issued by the PMO. The PM has decreed that financial assistance be provided on an urgent basis, particularly to those who have lost a family member. He also expressed his desire to visit the impacted areas, observe the damages and personally offer his condolences to those affected.
