In a bid to reduce pollution, Islamabad to be made Pakistan’s first pedestrian-friendly city

What happened: The Capital Development Authority is now planning to limit the use of private transport in the city as the authority announces to make Islamabad a pedestrian-friendly city. One of the urban policy specialists in Islamabad discussed the need for awareness campaigns regarding pollution in the city with the chairman of CDA, Dr. Naveed Iftikhar.

Details: Subsequently, the urban policy expert is quoted by a publication as,  “He highlighted the lack of facilities and infrastructure that are necessary to promote pedestrianism in the city.”  On the other hand, the chairman stated,  “Excessive use of private transport is the main culprit behind the increased air pollution in Islamabad.”  At the same time, Dr. Naveed Iftikhar also discussed the enforcement of paid parking as the CDA plans to launch the bus service operations in March 2022. 

More: It is pertinent to mention that the development came after the air pollution in Islamabad set new records of air pollution in the city as announced by the Environmental Protection Agency. Whereas, the urban and health experts stated that in order to make Islamabad pedestrian-friendly, an  “intricate strategy”  would be required.
