What happened: On February 28, Express Tribune reported that Karachi had become the fourth largest polluted city in the world, as the Air Quality Index continues to deteriorate in the provincial capital. Express Tribune’s report quotes, “Air quality index has surged to an unhealthy level of 193, showing utter negligence of the federal and Sindh governments towards environmental reforms.” Details: At the same time, giving the reference of an investigation report, it revealed that the air pollution in Karachi contains liquid and solid particles and gases. Whereas, the major contributors to air pollution in Karachi have been industrial emissions as well as the burning of garbage, emissions from generators, flying of dust and transport. More: Express Tribune further quotes, “All types of forest which used to help absorb carbon dioxide and clean air in Karachi, have been hacked to an alarming level.” On the other hand, it is pertinent to mention that the World Health Organization has said that air pollution is the most significant environmental threat to human health as well climate change.
