As Lahore’s air quality was moved from ‘hazardous’ to ‘unhealthy’ it has now become the third most polluted city in the world. According to the Air Quality Index on Saturday, Lahore ranked 157 making it the third most polluted city in the world, a step down from the second most polluted ranking it previously had. Uzbekistan’s Tashkent replaced Lahore as the second most polluted city while Delhi remains the first most polluted according to Air Visual, which ranks the air quality of cities across the globe. The air quality of Karachi, which was previously classified as ‘unhealthy’, become ‘unhealthy for sensitive groups’ with an AQI of 144. The urban city is the tenth most polluted city in the world. Lahore has been facing a smog crisis for the past five years with the city getting cloaked in smog during the winter seasons and flights being delayed due to the smog. The year marks the first time that the Punjab government announced the closure of schools due to the smog situation.
