What Happened: An Indian court ordered Dilmil Matrimony to pay Rs1.9 million to a client after failing to fulfill its promised matchmaking services.
What you need to know: An Indian matrimonial website has been ordered to pay Rs1.9 million to a man, Mr. S Vijay Kumar, after it failed to find a suitable bride for his son, despite initially promising to help. Mr. Kumar had paid INR 30,000 to Dilmil Matrimony, a matchmaking service, which assured him that profiles of eligible women would be shared within 45 days. However, after repeated visits to the company’s office, no suitable match was found.
What more: On April 30, 2024, Mr. Kumar requested a refund, but was met with unprofessional behavior from the office staff. According to the company, their policy only guarantees profile sharing, not a match, which Mr. Kumar was aware of. They also stated that refunds are typically issued within 45 days if the promised service isn’t provided or if the client finds a match independently. These terms were outlined in a form Mr. Kumar signed.
Also: A spokesperson claimed that the company had shared profiles with Mr. Kumar, and that issues arose when he focused on a profile, but the other family declined interest. The spokesperson also stated that they were personally open to a refund but were unavailable when Mr. Kumar visited the office, and staff lacked authority to handle refunds.
Additionally: After sending an unanswered legal notice, Mr. Kumar pursued the case in court. On October 28, the court ordered the company to pay an additional 6% as it appeared they did not meet their promised service standards. CEO Ruksar Shabnam clarified that the company was ready to refund but had required an application from Mr. Kumar, which he did not submit.
