What happened:
In conversation with journalists at Jati Umrah, PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz claimed that she “was fed rat-contaminated food” while incarcerated in Kot Lakhpat Jail. She also complained that the medication she was given was not fit to be consumed as it was infected with fungus. She said, “I was forced to take fungus-infected medicines in prison”. However, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Accountability and Interior, Barrister Mirza Shahzad Akbar refuted Maryam Nawaz’s claims and stated it was a “matter of record that this woman did not eat jail food for a single day”. “This woman’s food always came [prepared] from home,” Akbar said. “So either the rat belonged to the family or they are lying according to the ‘family tradition’”. Shahzad Akbar also jibbed about the Sharif family name, saying, “By the way, these rats seem to be quite ‘ Sharif ‘ [innocent] that they leave food behind”.
The background:
This is not the first time Maryam Nawaz has claimed mistreatment in jail. She previously said that the government tried to install cameras in her jail cell.
