Karachi’s mortuaries were closed across the city on Sunday, after two bodies brought into Edhi’s morgue were suspected to be those of patients who had died due to the Coronavirus. “The morgues have been closed over fears that the coronavirus will spread from them,” stated a city administration official. A representative from the Edhi office also confirmed that order of coffins and caskets have been suspended, and that his organisation has temporarily closed its mortuaries in line with the safety precautions. “We don’t want the virus to be transmitted to a volunteer and from him, to spread to the rest of the city,” he said. Following the lockdown, grave-diggers also disappeared from graveyards, stating that they are fearful of the virus being transmitted to them. “The problem of grave-diggers not being found these days is a problem,” admitted the director of graveyards. Citizens have also complained of being unable to find a grave to bury their loved ones.
