“Murree turns deadly”: Over 20 froze to death and numerous left injured in stranded cars

What happened: On Jan 8, the Punjab government declared Murree a ‘calamity-hit’ region after 20 people, visiting the hilltop, froze to death and numerous were reported injured. Details: Following the deaths, Punjab Chief Minister, Usman Buazdar issued orders to speed up rescue efforts and provide assistance to the 1,000 stranded cars which have now been prohibited from entering Gailyat in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. In a video message, Interior Minister, Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said tourists rushed to the hill station in such huge numbers “for the first time in 15 to 20 years,” causing a “big crisis.” What now: Sheikh Rasheed further stated that the administrations of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, as well as police, has also been trying to rescue stuck individuals and five platoons of the Pakistan Army, as well as Rangers and Frontier Corps, have been dispatched on an emergency basis. “Residents of Murree are providing food and blankets to trapped visitors,” he further added.
