If “effective measures” are not taken, Pakistan’s Covid-19 cases are likely to rise to 200,000 by mid-July alone.
Dr Tedros Adhanom who is the Director-General of WHO tweeted, “The virus has already spread throughout 115+ districts are affected, largely in Punjab & Sindh. The Covid-19 outbreak is creating significant additional pressure on an already overburdened health system, exacerbating the vulnerabilities of affected populations.” While speaking at the launch of the Pakistan National Strategic Preparedness Response Plan, Dr Tedros stated that the plan would require $595 million in funding. He urged that without effective interventions there could be a rise in cases to 200,000 by mid-July alone. “The impacts on economy could be devastating, doubling the number of people living in poverty,” he added.
