People question Uzma Khan’s withdrawal of FIR citing ‘misunderstanding’ despite presence of viral videos

Huma Khan, sister of Uzma Khan who was also allegedly attacked alongside her sister has released a statement to the Lahore Court. She has stated, on oath: “I understand my welfare and upcoming future. No such occurrence has been took place. Accused party has not made any torture upon me. I sustained injuries due to fallen of glass from table. The accused persons nominated in the FIR are innocent. My sister namely Uzma Khan got registered the instant FIR due to misunderstanding. Therefore, the same may very kindly be cancelled.” The statement, signed by her and notarized, has been submitted to the Lahore Court as evidence in the Uzma Khan case. In previously recorded video statements, Huma Khan named Amina Malik as the perpetrator for the attack on her and Uzma. However, with this new statement, she absolves the persons named in the FIR for responsibility, showing she has supposedly had a change of heart regarding what actually happened on the day of the attack. On Tuesday, her sister, Uzma Khan withdrew the initial FIR lodged against the assailants. When asked, Uzma stated that she had registered the FIR on the basis of a “misunderstanding”. “I don’t want to give any testimony or deposition in the above-stated case,” Uzma added.  Her lawyers, Hassan Niazi and Khadija Siddiqi have distanced themselves from the case. “This is to announce that we are disassociating from #UzmaKhan case. I understand the reasons of any settlement by two aggrieved women in a rigged system; my conscience doesn’t allow me to be part of any of that, even in a professional capacity,” Siddiqi tweeted. Niazi, also tweeting, wrote: “Since the first day, I had made it clear to my client that we won’t be part of any settlement. I only accepted the case to support the resolve of Uzma to get justice for her.” The #UzmaKhan case gained a significant amount of notoriety on social media in Pakistan, albeit for the wrong reasons; activists called out people for maligning the actresses’ character rather than focusing on the acts depicted in the leaked video. Presently, many who had previously followed the case are questioning whether a monetary settlement is the reason behind the withdrawal, while some are assuming the plaintiffs must have sought a settlement considering the influence Malik Riaz’s family has and the state of Pakistani’s legal system. Uzma Khan shared a public statement on her Twitter account one day prior to withdrawing the FIR.
