South Punjab to be made a province matter will be discussed in National Assembly

What happened: On March 25, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi presented a bill to the speaker of National Assembly, Asad Qaiser, the Consitution Amendment Bill 2022, for the establishment of South Punjab province. It is pertinent to mention that earlier Imran Khan had announced that a South Punjab Constitutional Amendment Bill would be brought in the parliament, and currently, the FM has asked for Bill’s discussion in Monday’s session.  Details: Whereas, a summary was being circulated for the cabinet’s approval regarding the bill’s amendment to split the Punjab province and increase the number of provinces in the country. Express Tribune quotes the development as,  “Create a fifth province of Pakistan amid serious political crisis and questions over its majority in the National Assembly.”  More:   At the same time, it has been proposed that the South Punjab province will comprise three divisions and have 56 seats of the National Assembly, and the provincial assembly will have 199 seats. Furthermore, Express Tribune quotes,  “The moves appear to be a political gimmick, as the government did not have a two-thirds majority in the National Assembly to get the Consitution amended.”
