As social distancing is implemented to curb the spread of the coronavirus, music students in Gaza City have now switched to online classes.
While some students feel that online instruction brings its own set of challenges, others are glad that they can continue their lessons. An instructor at Gaza Music Institute stated, “The challenges we sometimes face are when students do not have internet or a musical instrument at home while others face difficulty in tuning instruments.” Hamas says health conditions make a full lockdown unnecessary in Gaza, but it has closed schools, mosques, and marriage halls and has banned large street gatherings. Gazans fear the blockade has damaged their economy and slowed the development of health facilities, weakening their ability to fight the coronavirus.
