The new COVID-19 “Delta Plus” variant with increased transmission and vaccine resistance

What happened: There are now more than 40 cases of new COVID-19 Delta Plus variant in India. Indian authorities warn that this a “variant of concern”. It is also known as the AY.1 variant. Details: According to India’s Health Ministry, this variant spreads more easily and affects lungs. The Delta variant was responsible for the deadly second wave in India which crippled the Indian healthcare system. The new mutation, Delta Plus, could lead to a worse third wave of infections. What is being done: Research is being conducted within India and globally to test the effectiveness of vaccines for this variant.
