The Race For NA-129 – Lahore

NA-129 is a constituency in Lahore, which under the previous census was NA-125. This area mainly consists of DHA and Cantonment. PML-N has won this race in the previous general elections, twice. This time around again the fight for NA-129 is much harder. Here are the two contenders. In 2013 this constituency also served as a source for many controversies such as poll rigging and violence clashes at poll stations.

Sardar Ayaz Sadiq

Party – Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz  (PML-N) Highest Office Held – Speaker of National Assembly

Things You Need to Know

Sadiq started his career in the 1990s as a member of PTI. Imran Khan was one of his class fellows. But in 1998 due to ideological differences with Khan, he left the party. In 2001 he joined PML-N and won the NA-122 seat against Khan in 2002 general elections. He defeated Khan twice, in 2008 and 2013 in the NA-122 constituency. However, in 2015 Imran Khan claimed poll rigging in NA-122 and Sadiq was de-seated. Elections were held, Sadiq won again and retained his office as Speaker of the National Assembly. Generally, Sadiq is considered a cool-headed person. As the NA Speaker too, he is considered impartial in his office. Earlier last month, he claimed that the Returning Officer for NA-129 is biased towards the PTI candidate. Sadiq has warned that he will not accept the outcome from the polls if his demands to change the RO ahead of the elections is met.

Aleem Khan

Party – Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf PTI Highest Office Held – Member of the Provincial Parliament and President of PTI Central Punjab

Things You Need to Know

Aleem is a businessman who joined PTI in 2012. Like his opponent, he too belongs to Lahore. As per papers submitted by Aleem Khan, he has declared the net worth of his assets at Rs918,2,78,855. He borrowed loans to the tune of Rs699,704,306 from his own company. He is currently facing a NAB investigation relating to offshore assets. The Lahore High Court also dismissed a petition challenging his candidature on Thursday. Citing lack of timely approach towards the court, two members of the bench rejected the appeal allowing Aleem Khan to contest elections from NA-129 as planned.

Who has a greater chance?

Sadiq calling out the RO’s bias has charged the political atmosphere of NA-129. Claims of pre-election rigging by Sadiq could potentially rile the people to vote against PTI’s Aleem Khan. In 2015 by-elections for NA-122 Aleem contested against Sadiq for PTI. The former gained 72,082 votes and lost to Sadiq’s 74,525 votes. The previous race tells that this time again we should expect a neck to neck competition between the two. However, the fact that Sadiq has defeated PTI’s Chief himself conveniently in the past tells us that defeating him might not be that easy this time around as well. So PML-N might just win the seat, again.
