What happened: In June 2021, Kevin McCoy’s “Quantum,” the world’s first non-fungible token, was sold for $1.4 million at Sotheby’s auction, ‘Natively Digital: A Curated NFT Sale.’ Details: In conjunction with internet entrepreneur Anil Dash, Kevin McCoy’s Quantum, a vividly coloured GIF of a digital octagon, was minted on the Namecoin blockchain on 2 May 2014. The buyer, know by his alias as ‘Sillytuna,’ also sold a “CryptoPunk” NFT from his collection for $11.8 million at the same auction.
