This AI calculator can estimate how close you might be to death

Researchers have developed an AI-based mortality calculator that estimates how close you may be to death.

Published in The Lancet Digital Health, the study shows that AI-powered electrocardiograms (ECGs) can predict a person’s risk for future health complications and even mortality, though these tools aren’t yet part of routine medical practice.

Existing prediction models lack patient-specific guidance, are difficult to interpret, and don’t always match biological realities. To address these gaps, researchers created the AI-ECG Risk Estimator (AIRE).

Beyond mortality predictions, AIRE can also predict the onset of heart failure—a condition where the heart’s pumping efficiency declines, potentially causing various health issues and premature death—in almost 80% of cases.

“We aimed to overcome the limitations of previous AI-ECG methods by developing the AI-ECG Risk Estimator (AIRE) platform,” the researchers stated.
