What happened: On March 23, a dramatic footage emerged which captured the moment of a suspected car thief named Richard Howard surrendering to police after a 100mph chase, admitting that he was afraid of being bitten by the officers’ trained canine. Details: In the early hours of Feb 5, the 28-year-old car thief was seen driving a silver Peugeot as the police patrol observed the automobile driving recklessly through the streets of Coventry, West Midlands. They assumed it was linked to a string of thefts and started following it. In the footage, Howard could be seen driving through tiny residential streets before pulling over and hopping out of the car with his hands raised. According to the police, the thief had a change of heart when he realised he was being “chased by a dog handler,” as he pleaded to the officers to keep the police canine, Gunner, on a leash. What happened next: Howard and another man, who had been dropped off earlier in the night, were suspected of looking for high-value cars to steal. The suspect was sentenced to 18 months in prison after pleading guilty to reckless driving and driving while disqualified at Warwick Crown Court. West Midlands Police Sergeant John Simpson,in-charge of the case, said: “Our incredible police dogs have a reputation that precedes them: they don’t even have to get out of the car to make an impact.”
