Thugs of Hindostan – Aamir Khan’s flirtation with historical fiction

Thugs of Hindustan is based on Philip Meadows Taylor’s 1839 novel ‘Confessions of a Thug’, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Katrina Kaif and Fatima Sana Shaikh. This is not the first time Aamir Khan has dabbled in producing a period film, however he takes an interesting leap of faith by indulging in a fictionalized period storyline akin to Bahubaali . Khan insists that Thugs of Hindostan is an epic action-adventure film written and directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, he claims the film is for purely entertainment value and tests out his multifaceted acting ability with this role. The release date is rumored to be near Diwali on 8 November 2018. The film tells a fictional story set between 1790 and 1805 about a thug called Azad, the central protagonist whose gang of thugs posed a serious challenge to the British Empire in India during the early 19th century. Watch the trailer here: Aamir has said that his character in the film isn’t someone you could trust. “Thugs of Hindostan is a big action-adventure film. There’s no message in that. I am playing a character who cannot be trusted at all – [so it’s the] very opposite of Dangal … He’s a very slippery character. He has no scruples at all – for money he can sell his mother out. He’s like that, [the character] is a very entertaining guy. So it’s a very entertaining kind of a film. No message this time. Just have a good time,” he added. Thugs of Hindostan is directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya of Dangal. Thugs of Hindostan has uniquely been made on a massive budget. A source told Hindustan Times about the films shoot and elaborate sets, “Since sea and ships play an integral part in the plot, Aamir as well as (producer) Aditya Chopra were sure that they would go all out to present the biggest spectacle that Hindi cinema has ever witnessed. The film’s budgets are yet to be ascertained, but the cost for the two ships easily runs into several crores.” The two mammoth ships – weighing two lakh kilos – were built by over 1,000 people, including international designers and ship makers. “It took over a year to build these two ships off the coast of Malta (in Europe). Director Viktor (Vijay Krishna Acharya) wanted to go the whole hog in terms of scale and create a huge visual experience. Authenticity and aesthetics have both been kept in mind given the fact that it’s a period film.”

We wish Aamir Khan best of luck in his endeavor and have full faith in his abilities to translate his angst for British India due to his master pieces in the past Lagaan, Mangal Pandey and short references in Rang Dey Basanti!

Four posters have been released of the main characters featuring Aamir himself, Katrina Kaif, Amitabh Bachan and Fatima Sana Shiekh who have embodied archaic tropes and their costumes and exclusive poster releases promise for an exciting movie experience!
