Since Colombia imposed a lockdown in light of the coronavirus, many residents have become unemployed.
This has created many financial problems for Columbians who must wait out the lockdown scheduled to continue till at least April 13th. In the city of Soacha, the mayor’s office has encouraged people to place a red cloth outside of their windows to alert authorities that they require financial aid. The government of Colombia has pledged aid to many locals, especially needy workers. One community action coordinator stated, “The only way the government and other people can reach us is if we use the red cloth.” Many of these people are independent workers, recyclers, informal workers and heads of low-income households. With Colombia’s coronavirus cases nearing 1400, such actions have become necessary to get government attention.
