What happened:

A health emergency has been declared in the mountainous region of Pirkoh and other areas of Balochistan as cholera spreads widely throughout the province. Six people from Balochistan’s Dera Bugti died within hours of cholera diagnosis, and nearly a hundred were taken to the hospital. It is pertinent to mention that there have been 2856 cases of cholera in Balochistan to date as the spread continues.

However, the protest outbreaks in Balochistan demand the government to ensure the availability of clean drinking water, as the infection is caused by ingestion of contaminated water or food. Dera Bugti residents have staged protests in different parts of the locality demanding clean drinking water as “the government is forcing them to drink dirty water.”

In an interview with a news channel, the district health officer of Dera Bugti, Dr. Muhammad Azam Bugti, had said, “People are forced to drink the same water that the animals drink, and over 85% of Balochistan’s population is deprived of clean water.”
