Coke Studio producer Xulfi receives Rs.10 crore legal notice from Nirmala Maghani’s team over copyright infringement

What happened: Nirmala Maghani’s lawyers issued a Rs.10 crore legal notice to Coke Studio producer, Xulfi on Jan 24, alleging copyright infringement in connection with the Coke Studio 14 song, ‘Tu Jhoom.’ The notice: The notice, addressed to Xulfi, stated: “On June 14, 2021, my client, Nirmala Maghani, sent her compositions, including the melody of ‘Tu Mera Ranjha,’ on your mobile, using WhatsApp messenger, all in the form of voice notes. As per the copyright laws, you don’t have the right to telecast/broadcast or upload on YouTube the said song unless you have obtained permission from my client as it’s made based on notes and composition of my client. You are hereby instructed to obtain permission or license from my client unless granted, so please remove the song from every social media website, YouTube and from [the] album of Coke Studio 14 as it is infringing upon the rights of my client.” The response: In reaction to this, GIRAFFE PAKISTAN, Xulfi’s co-founded company that manages Coke Studio 14, told the Express Tribune,”We received a notice last evening, and our legal staff will respond to it as soon as possible through proper procedures. We are currently obliged to limit our comments in deference to Ms Maghani’s legal process.”  What else: In two separate statements by Xulfi, he has already refuted all allegations of copyright infringement. The second statement was supported by ‘video evidence’ of a conversation between Xulfi and Associate Producer, Abdullah Siddiqui in May 2021, implying that they were working on the ‘Tu Jhoom’ melody, a month before Nirmala claimed to have sent it to Xulfi.
