Lawyers physically assaulted a woman complainant in Karachi

What happened: The event drew widespread condemnation on social media, with many users shaming the lawyer. A video circulating on social media shows a group of lawyers assaulting a female complainant, named Laila Parveen. She belongs to Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaaf. Along with her brother, she was betean up by a group of lawyers inside the Malir Court. Details: Bol News reported the victim’s statement, ““We came for the case hearing today. My former husband’s lawyer friends attacked my brother and when I tried to intervene to protect him, they assaulted me as well.” In her video statement, Laila named the lawyers who attacked her as, Jalbani and Shehzad Saeed. She was allegedly tortured for filing a complaint against a lawyer who gave her a bouncing check of Rs.6.5 million Rabia Azfar Nizami, a member of the Sindh Legislative Assembly, published the video on Twitter and called for a change to the Legal Practitioner Act to prevent lawyers from indulging in such heinous behaviour. According to another version of the story, the woman was allegedly beaten by lawyers of her ex-husbands. A Twitter user shared the video and said, “Just another day in Pakistan.”

Police officer, Amna Baig commented on the video, “This is insanity! Where we are heading as a nation?”

What else: More than a hundred attorneys attacked Assistant Commissioner Sialkot Sonia Sadaf’s office last week. After Naib Tehsildar filed a complaint, police opened a case against the lawyers under sections 440/341 and 186, According to that, approximately 100 lawyers forced their way into the AC’s office and threw out the furniture.
