No Indians included in the ICC Cricketer of Year 2021, as Shaheen Afridi remains among the top-4
The Pakistani pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi has been nominated for the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy along with Muhammad Rizwan, Joe Root, and Kane Williamson. The International Cricket Council applauded the Pakistani pacer’s performance and wrote, “Shaheen took 78 wickets in 36 international matches this year at an average of 22.20 runs.”
It is pertinent to mention that Shaheen Shah Afridi also delivered his career-best bowling figures against the Windies as he took six wickets for 51 runs. ICC’s statement regarding Shaheen Shah Afridi read, “He ruled the shortest format throughout the calendar year, scalping 23 wickets in 21 matches with his death bowling improving leaps and bounds.” The ICC applauded Shaheen’s lethal bowling against the Indians in the ICC T20 World Cup.
The Pakistani wicketkeeper-batter Rizwan was also among the 4 shortlisted for the Sir Garfield Sobers Award. ICC’s press release for Rizwan read, “The Pakistani wicketkeeper-batter ruled the roost in 2021… Apart from his exploits with the bat, he was as solid as ever behind the stumps.” At the same time, it is pertinent to mention that the wicketkeeper-batter is also the 1st player to score more than 1,000 runs in T20Is in a calendar year.
