What happened:

Boiler Room, a London-based online music platform, launched its first-ever broadcast in Pakistan on June 20 at 7 p.m. It was billed as a “celebration of Pakistani music.” The independent performers brought their distinct flair to one of the world’s top streaming platforms for live performances, stitching together EDM with folk melodies and pop music.

The line-up:

The shows were taped ahead of time and webcast live later on Monday night. Ustad Noor Bakhsh, Jaubi, Noorani, Natasha Ejaz, Ozzie, Malik, Lyla, Kukido B2B TMPST, and Tollcrane were among the up-and-coming musicians on the bill.

Why it matters:

The forum began as a fringe platform with a webcam stuck to a wall, providing a window into London’s thriving underground music scene. It has now grown to become one of the largest online platforms of its kind.

More:

This broadcast is “a show to commemorate the country’s new emergent dance music community and its original history of live performance,” according to the Boiler Room’s Instagram announcement.
