Sonam Wangchuk is currently in the news for his hunger strike, protesting against the Modi government over the NEET paper leak and demanding accountability. There’s a common misconception that Sonam Wangchuk is anti-Pakistan or seeking Pakistani Kashmir. In reality, his demands are quite different.
Wangchuk is a climate activist and education reformer dedicated to protecting Ladakh’s environment and the rights of its people. He has never launched campaigns or taken any action against Pakistan. In fact, he has praised Dawn News for highlighting climate change issues and helping raise awareness.
In fact, Wangchuk actually traveled to Islamabad to speak at a climate change conference hosted by Dawn and the UN. During that visit, his focus was entirely on saving Himalayan glaciers, an issue that deeply impacts both India and Pakistan.
When India removed Article 370 and turned the region into Union Territories, Pakistan strongly rejected the move and called it illegal. However, Sonam Wangchuk celebrated it because his homeland, Ladakh, got its own separate identity. Wangchuk is not a Pakistani ally, but he is certainly not an anti-Pakistan agent either.
