“The world is their classroom”: Mother of two decides to ‘unschool’ her children and make them global citizens
A mother of two has revealed how she has ‘unschooled’ her children by abandoning standard lectures and textbooks. Shanel Bell, 34, who moved to Bury-St-Edmunds, Suffolk, from Colorado, has always home-schooled her daughters Maui, 10, and Maya, six, with husband Nicholas, but has just switched to ‘unschooling.’
Unschooling is a non-traditional approach to home education that allows the child to “guide” the teaching rather than following a set curriculum. Shanel shared that she teaches her kids Math through cooking, history in a museum, and the teachings are tailored to the children’s interests, “Some people are afraid of learning that doesn’t take place behind a desk, but they don’t understand that the world is their classroom,” Shanel insisted. She further said that its helping her kids to become global citizens.
While it is lawful to home-school your children, the legality of unschooling is debatable. The Department of Education (DoE) states that children of compulsory school age must receive a suitable full-time education, whether in school or not.
