Why Did the Prime Minister Ignore the PIMS Safety Reports for Over a Year?

In June 2025, a formal investigation report was submitted directly to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s office. A National Assembly subcommittee warned that Islamabad’s public hospitals, including PIMS, failed to meet basic patient safety standards. The report red-flagged the Islamabad Healthcare Regulatory Authority for failing to implement emergency protocols or conduct fire safety audits.

For over a year, these warnings were ignored.

The Consequences:

On August 26, 2026, a faulty AC unit sparked a fire in the nursery after oxygen lines caught fire. Reports say emergency exits were locked from outside to prevent babies from being stolen, while the sprinkler system was not working.

The Prime Minister has suspended Federal Health Secretary Aslam Ghori and ordered a high-level inquiry under former Interior Secretary Shahid Khan. But damage control, deadlines, and blaming officials cannot bring back the 14 lives lost.
