Imran Khan’s tweet was “insensitive” and “shocking” on the Murree tragedy?
The prime minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan(@imrankhan.pti), hours after more than 15 deaths were reported in Murree, tweeted about the incident that drew negative attention. In his tweet, Khan wrote, “Shocked & upset at tragic deaths of tourists on the road to Murree. Unprecedented snowfall & rush of ppl proceeding without checking weather conditions caught district admin unprepared..” However, many political commentators and Twitter users criticized the choice of words in his tweet.
The Twitter users claimed that Imran Khan’s choice of words highlighted victim-blaming. Anchor and journalist Absa Komal(@absa.komal1) wrote, “Insensitive and shocking response, it is your administration’s failure accept it at least!” At the same time, senior journalist Ahmad Waleed(@ahmadwaleed14) shared another incident, “Last year were stuck in Murree and the administration representative was nowhere to be seen and no one asked.”
Zebunnisa Burki(@zebunnisaburki), in her tweet, wrote, “Nearly twenty people died just because they wanted a two-minute respite from the disaster our lives have become. They died in their cars, in the cold, with their families. There is no excuse. There can be no justification. This is criminal.” While, Javeria Siddique tweeted, “Pls stop blaming tourists. Ghareeb loug Dubai London toh nahi jaa skty.”
